Accessibility and Social Media: A Systematic Literature Review Addressing Social Media Usability Barriers for Visually Impaired Individuals / 2022
As social media continues to be an integral part of our society, it is imperative to ensure accessibility is at the forefront of every platform. During my second year of graduate school, a classmate and I collaborated on a research paper investigating the accessibility of social media platforms for individuals with visual impairments.
ABSTRACT: This systematic literature review is a collection of articles revealing the experiences and challenges individuals with visual impairments encounter when using photo-centric social media platforms. |
The FreeBritney Story: How Fan Activism Transformed Gossip to Transmedia / 2021
Transmedia Storytelling is an essential pillar of the Emerging Media Design and Development graduate program. During my first year, I had an opportunity to develop a case study on a transmedia story in pop-culture. During this same time, Britney Spears was in the midst of her conservatorship removal trails and the fan activity around the situation inspired me to learn more.
ABSTRACT: The FreeBritney movement is a feral transmedia story initiated by Britney Spears fans who work to unveil the hidden story of Britney Spears and her conservatorship with her father, Jamie Spears. FreeBritney has sparked a social media movement, protests, podcasts, YouTube series, and documentaries. Currently, there is little academic research on the FreeBritney story. This paper explores FreeBritney's feral transmedia story elements and advocates for more research on fan-based activism. To evaluate the transmedia elements of FreeBritney, a ten-part analytical model dissects the story. The findings make it clear that the parts work together to build the FreeBritney movement and give the audience a well-rounded telling of Britney's life in a conservatorship. This research can inspire other research efforts to explore FreeBritney’s nuance, furthering the discourse on the mistreatment of female celebrities, the rise in fan-activism, and the reform of conservatorship laws. |
