Intergroup Dialogue and Restorative Practices Coordinator / 2021 - 2022
During my second year of graduate school at Ball State University, I worked as the intergroup dialogue (IGD) and restorative practices (RP) coordinator for the Office of Inclusive Excellence and the College of Communication, Information, and Media.
Intergroup dialogue brings together individuals from two or more social identity groups to foster understanding and empathy in a facilitated learning environment. At Ball State, this looks like training faculty and staff to lead discussions about social identities like race, gender, and religion for students, organizations, and other Ball State community members. Restorative practices aim to provide proactive strategies to build a sense of community, encourage relationship building, and decrease confrontations. Suppose there is an incident between two or more people. In that case, our facilitators will lead restorative chats and circles to get the participating parties to share their points of view to find a middle ground of empathy and understanding.
